Bad credit makes it harder to get loans, credit cards or even rental agreements, but it is not permanent. A bad credit score in South Africa is usually anything below 600, caused by missed payments, defaults or judgments. You can rebuild it by paying on time, lowering balances and fixing report errors.

    What is a credit score?

Your credit score is a three-digit number, usually between 300 and 850, that reflects how likely you are to repay credit on time. It is calculated from your credit report — a record of your accounts, payment history, defaults, and any court judgments. A score of 700 or above is generally seen as good, while a score below 600 is considered bad.

    What causes bad credit?

    • Missed or late payments on loans, store cards or accounts.
    • Defaults and accounts handed over to collections.
    • Court judgments or being placed under debt review.
    • Using too much of your available credit at once.

How to improve your credit score

    1. Pay every account on time. Payment history is the single biggest factor in your score. Set up debit orders or reminders so you never miss a due date.
    2. Reduce your balances. Try to keep what you owe below about 30% of your available credit limit.
    3. Keep older accounts open. A long, well-managed credit history counts in your favour.
    4. Avoid many applications at once. Each new application can dent your score, so apply only when you genuinely need credit.
    5. Check your credit report for errors. You are entitled to a free report each year from the major bureaus. Dispute anything that is wrong.

    Can you borrow while rebuilding?

Responsible lenders, including eKasi Pay Credit, must run a credit check and an affordability assessment before approving any loan. We cannot approve applicants who are under debt review, have court judgments, or are in arrears — this protects you from taking on debt you cannot manage. If you are in good standing but still rebuilding, a small, well-managed short-term loan repaid on time can help strengthen your record.

Improving your credit takes time and discipline, but every on-time payment moves you forward. For more on how lending works, see our FAQs or read How to Rebuild Your Credit Score.
